Mac Mail on new EL Capitan install crashes

I have a 2010 15” Macbook pro 2.4 Ghz i5 with 8 GB memory and a 750 GB HD. I have it partitioned into two segments, 250 GB for the system, with 190 GB free and a 500 GB segment for storage of which 290 GB are free. It started crashing about 2 months ago a couple of times a day and got progressively worse until it was happening about every 15 minutes. The biggest culprits were the Mac Mail program, Word and Photoshop/Bridge CS4. So I wiped the system partition with a three pass erase and reinstalled El Capitan from a thumb drive and did a migration from an external Time Machine. It started crashing again almost immediately, so I did it again this time without migrating, just setting everything up like new. I got as far as setting up preferences, importing bookmarks and music, and re-establishing an account in the Mac Mail program, which was where the wheels came off and it started crashing again. So, can anyone point me in a direction as far as what I should try next? Obviously I have a conflict or something with Mac Mail, but I’m not sure how to resolve it since I hadn’t added any programs yet that weren’t on the El Capitan install. I thought about wiping the entire drive, but I don’t know if that would make any difference. Thanks! Scott
