I recently updated to El Capitan
my Macs:
- MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011), Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, Graphics Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
- iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2009),Processor 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 16 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
Installation
iMac Install: Directly from the app store.
MacBook Pro Install: Created a boot up install usb and I completed a clean installation. Imported my Apps and selective documents.
- Upon installation on both machines I logged in to iCloud to set up keychain access.
Problem
I noticed a lag in performance initially, when the “wheel of death” would appear and application windows would freeze.
- I opened disk utilities to verify and repair disk to discover El Capitan has updated this option “First Aid”. I completed thin both machines. The problem continued.
- I opened Keychain Access. Opened Keychain first aid, selected “verify”, and the following error appears.
- Keychain can’t be unlocked automatically. Please attempt to unlock ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain from Keychain Access.
- Here begins the pop-up ****.
- It will not accept my password. Here endless pop-up windows begin appearing, one after another asking for the same, programs freeze, it becomes impossible to work on the computer. If I try to repair the keychain, the following errors appear.
Unable to read settings for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
Keychain can’t be unlocked automatically. Please attempt to unlock ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain from Keychain Access.
Unable to change password for ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain. Please change password using Edit > Change Password for Keychain.
- As the ops-up window will not accept my password, I try to cancel, it will not go away. Now I have it permanently on top of whatever is open.
- Next, I open Keychain Access preferences, and try to reset my Default Keychain. It states to create a new password via “Edit/ Change Password for Keychain Login”, but this doesn’t resolve the problem at all.
- Under preferences “Keep login keychain unlocked is selected.
- I have tried to delete the keychain from the local library as per various online discussions, and per Apple online support, and restarted computers. It doesn’t make any difference.
- The problem in my iMac became so bad nothing would work, I couldn’t use anything as whenever I opened an app, system preferences, anything it would freeze. I would have to force it to close.
- I needed to restore from a Time Machine Backup 3 times on the iMac now.
- My only solution that I have found so I can use my computers to work is to log out of iCloud on both computers. At least I can use the apps again, and the performance is back, but I still have the pop-up ****.
Overall, am enjoying El Capitan, but the Keychain access problem from what I read is common and a bug in the system. If anyone has a solution, or if someone at Apple wants to pick this up and try to solve it I would be really grateful. Short of this, tomorrow I will walk into the local Apple store with both computers under my arm and then Apple can’t just fob me off.
